Jacobs (UK) Ltd - Associate Director (2023-2025)
Task Lead for HS2-TAA. Managing a team of 20 to 30 technical reviewers for the technical approval of high speed rail viaducts, bridges and structures. Seconded into HS2 as a Senior Construction Assurance Manager for viaduct construction at the Delta Junction. Works include elevated precast segmental viaducts constructed using the progressive cantilever method with temporary mast, cable stay and swivel crane.
Works Examiner for and on behalf of the Smart Motorway Alliance. Responsible for managing a small team of works examiners to assess construction compliance on a number of SMART motorway assets including advanced directional sign long span gantries, MS4 cantilever gantries, street lighting, CCTV masts and retaining walls.
Project Verifier, Principal Designer and Technical Reviewer - Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF). Responsible for technical review and health and safety screening of miscellaneous design submissions including steel viaduct repainting, expansion joint and parapet replacement and re-surfacing.

RPS Consulting - Glasgow Airport Investment Area – Designer’s Site Representative (2019 to 2022)

 

Designer’s Site Representative for the design and construction phase of a Development Bypass at Glasgow Airport. The project included multiple disciplines including roadworks, earthworks and pavement, steel and precast concrete road and footbridges, utilities, watermain, gravity foul and rising main, Pumping Station, M+E, street lighting and landscaping. Permanent on-site presence for the Main Contractor’s (WBCEL) Designer (RPS). Duties included administrating and managing the review, assembly and submission of design packages, issuing designers site instructions, co-ordinating output from BIM processes, site supervision and monitoring site activities for safety, environmental and quality compliance. Specialist activities included review of steel bridge fabrication, transportation and heavy lift processes. 

SMEC South Africa (2018 to 2019)

Resident Engineer - Technical, Mtentu Bridge

Responsible for administration and management of all technical submissions, meetings and contractor liaison on Mtentu River Bridge, the highest bridge built in Africa with pier heights of approximately 223 meters. The bridge comprises both incremental launch approaches and a balanced cantilever main span of 260m. 

 

Scotland Transerv (2015 - 2018)

Resident Engineer, Erskine Bridge, Scotland

Responsible for managing a small on-site team for the maintenance and upgrade of Erskine Bridge. Duties include managing upgrade and maintenance schemes including cable stay re-tensioning, tower top navigation light replacement, steel orthotropic deck strengthening, bearing and substructure refurbishment and new surface and internal deck lighting and  power, electrical and communications systems fit out. Responsible for managing all permanent inspection and maintenance access equipment including underdeck inspection gantries and tower and cable stay man-rider platforms. Responsible for co-ordination of all traffic management, cyclic maintenance operations and maintenance manual bridge inspections.

Responsible for overall contract management and administration for the Kingston Bridge Cope and Parapet Refurbishment Works Contract.

Engineering Manager – Structures Bridges and Highways - London 2012

Engineering Manager for the design and construction of structures, bridges and highways on the London 2012 Olympic Park. As part of the project delivery team I was responsible for co-ordinating and managing project consultants and contractors, engaging with town planning, rail interface, sustainability and security teams and stakeholders to meet delivery programme.

Seconded to Accra, Ghana for financial and technical audit of Kumasi Techiman highway.

 

Design Representative – Contract 310 – Channel Tunnel Rail Link – UK

Responsible for coordination, review and implementation of all design based site activities during construction, including systemwide interface, review of contractors design submissions, control of design changes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Senior Design Engineer / Design Representative – Medway Crossing – UK

Responsible for the design of the superstructure of the Medway Crossing, a 1235m multi-span high speed railway viaduct forming part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The structure comprises an externally prestressed concrete box girder supported on reinforced concrete pier columns and piled foundations. The central 152m navigation span over the River Medway is designed for balanced free cantilever construction with approach spans designed for incremental launching. Following completion of the design I was responsible for coordination, review and implementation of all design based activities during construction.

 

Team Leader – Second Kuching Bridge – Malaysia

Responsible for the design and preparation of contract documents for the Second Kuching Bridge, a seven span structure with a central navigation span over the Kuching River of 99m. The central spans of the structure were designed for balanced cantilever construction with the sidespans designed for span by span construction.

Senior Resident Engineer – Kuala Lumpur Light Rail Transit System – Malaysia

Site supervision of Section 1 of the 4.35RM 4.35 billion Light Rail Transit System 2 for Kuala Lumpur comprising 14.1 km of elevated viaduct with six associated stations. The viaduct comprised multiple single and continuous single and double track box girders of external prestressed precast segmental construction erected utilizing a total of four 138m long SP and five 81m CD Moveable Segmental Bridge Launchers.

 
Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd (1989-1996)

Resident Engineer – KapShui Mun  Bridge – Hong Kong

Site supervision of Kap Shui Mun Bridge, a five span cable stayed bridge comprising a 430m main span with two 160m sidespans. The superstructure of the main span comprises an 8m deep composite double action trapezoidal steel box girder with all concrete sidespans. The 150m high H-shaped concrete towers were constructed using a climb form system. The sidespans were constructed by incremental launching with the main span erected by conventional free cantilevering. The structure is supported by two planes of parallel mono strand cables in a semi-fan arrangement with hold down stays at each sidespan substructure.

 

Senior Engineer – Burswood Bridge – Sydney, Australia

Seconded to Connell Wagner Pty Ltd., Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

 

Prepared tender design for Burswood Bridge over the Swan River, Perth; a 406m, 9 span twin box single cell prestressed concrete superstructure designed for incremental launching with associated reinforced earth abutment and marine pier substructures.

Bridge design for viaduct structures on the HK$6200 million North Lantau Expressway including:

 

Tung Chung Sea Channel Railway Bridge – a twin track, 322m long 8 span single cell prestressed box girder girder designed for incremental launching with bored piled RC land and marine based substructures.

 

Tsing Chau Wan and Ta Shui Wan Expressway Viaducts – 430m and 560m long dual independent cellular prestressed concrete box girders comprising 8 and 13 spans respectively and designed for span by span construction with bored piled RC abutment, pier and column substructures.

 

Design of highway structures on Yuen Long Southern Bypass including Castle Peak Road Interchange Structures 11A and 11B – simply supported voided RC slab overbridges with substructures and associated approach retaining structures and underpasses.

 

Design and Site Supervision of Yuen Long Cable Bridge – a single span flat arch steel truss girder spanning 67m over an existing nullah and simply supported within steel H-piled RC chamber substructures. This facility provides a crossing to accommodate 132kV and pilot cables for China Light and Power.

Both structures were articulated and detailed to accommodate the effects of mining subsidence.
